Meet Our Ambassadors: Jennie

Jennie Jennie is an experienced gardener in her 60’s from Amersham, Berkshire, who got the bug for gardening when she was just a little girl. With many fond memories of spending hours outside in the garden with her sisters, she now enjoys doing the same with her children and grandchildren.

Jennie’s sizeable garden is bursting with colour, flowers and foliage and her lush green lawn is the envy of all her neighbours. Having recently retired, she now looks forward to dedicating even more time to her outside space, and to growing more fresh fruit and vegetables. Not only does Jennie find gardening extremely relaxing and therapeutic, creating a sense of escape and achievement, she also claims it’s fantastic exercise and a lot more fun than the gym!

She also enjoys spending quality time in her picture perfect garden with friends and family. With two young grandchildren to entertain, she regularly gets them helping out in the garden and they just love to get their hands dirty, planting vegetables and bright and cheerful floral displays - they also love hunting for slugs and snails!

With so many years of gardening experience under her belt, Jennie loves sharing her knowledge with others and here are three of her top tips...

Jennie’s Top Tips:

Tip 1: Invest some time in preparing the soil before you plant, which will make a huge difference to the end result. I always remove weeds, rocks and debris before turning the soil over, and then I add some soil improver and compost.

Tip 2: Tackle weeds head on. Not only do they look ugly but they take valuable nutrients and water from the soil, leaving less for your beautiful displays that really need it.

Tip 3: Learn how to cultivate plants, which is not only the cheapest way to populate your plant community, but it also gives you more control over their health and longevity. There are several different techniques, so experiment with a few different methods until you find what works best for you.
