Meet Our Ambassadors: Rebecca
Rebecca, 31, is a PR professional who developed a passion for gardening when she bought her own flat in Richmond on Thames. Despite only having a very small patio and a couple of window boxes to play around with, this hasn’t stopped Rebecca from creating a horticultural haven outside her back door!
Rebecca tends to focus on gardening projects that are quick and easy to achieve over the weekend and she loves to experiment with bright and on-trend colour schemes that make her patio an extension of her living room.
With no family living nearby to pass on their gardening knowledge, Rebecca took on a ‘suck-it-and-see’ attitude when she moved into her flat, and dabbled in planting flowers in her neighbour’s old tin buckets and watering cans. A few years on, she’s got herbs growing from her window boxes, a plethora of pots and hanging baskets bursting with her favourite colours. She’s even started to grow tomatoes and potatoes in grow bags on her patio.
Today Rebecca takes a lot of her inspiration from gardening blogs and websites and feels it’s now her turn to share some of the handy hints she’s picked up over the years. So here are her top three tips for beginners...
Rebecca’s Top Tips:
Tip 1: Most of my gardening knowledge derives from trial and error, so don’t be afraid to get stuck in and try out new ideas. Any mistakes can be easily rectified and you’ll have lots of fun along the way.
Tip 2: It’s great to experiment with colours, but make sure you take note of height, size and seasonality so you have a planting scheme than works. Ask the staff at your local garden centre if you’re not sure what to buy, or use our discussion forum and we’ll be happy to help.
Tip 3: If outside space is an issue, try ‘vertical gardening’ where you’ll be gardening upwards and not at ground level. It’s really easy, just place your displays on walls, fence posts, or even an old step ladder, then try hanging baskets and trellis’.
If you have a gardening question you’d like to put to our panel of moderators then please post your messages in the LoveTheGarden Discussion Forum and we’ll post a response to you as soon as we can.
