Meet Our Forum Moderators: Vicky
Vicky, 28, has gained a wealth of knowledge during her 12 years within the horticultural industry. Her experience ranges from garden maintenance to horticultural management for the ‘top flyers’ of UK garden centres. She now draws on this varied background to answer gardening questions as a Consumer Services Advisor.
Vicky prefers a more ‘natural’ feel of garden planting with an even balance between flowers and foliage, so as a regular visitor to National Trust properties she is never short ideas for her own garden. Attracting and creating a haven for wildlife within her garden is a passion of Vicky’s.
Her favourite plants are roses. Although they can require a little more care than some other plants, the rewards of beautiful scented blooms are well worth it. A trusty bottle of RoseClear 3 is always at hand in the garden shed!
Vicky’s Top Tips:
Tip 1: Prepare your soil by digging in organic matter such as well rotted manure. When planting flowering plants add some ‘fit for purpose’ compost like Levington Rose, Tree & Shrub Compost to aid the establishment of the roses.
Tip 2: To avoid the dreaded Black Spot, keep vigilant and spray your roses at the 1st sign of disease, and continue every 14 days. If you use RoseClear 3 it will also contain an insecticide to control those sap sucking aphids.
Tip 3: If choosing a climbing rose, make sure you choose one for the height you require, most patio roses will climb to around 8ft. A climbing rose will always perform best when allowed to reach it’s maximum height.
