Hi everyone, a newbie to this forum, and indeed to gardening. i bought miraglo patch magic back in mid-march, and sowed it there and then, watering it whenever it went light brown, as instructed. now end of may, no growth whatsoever. the seeds are forlornly just laying there. i have contacted miraclo gro about this, awaiting a reply. ..i'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem, or have any advice for me, please?

Hi Chrissy and Bext,

Unfortunately this year has been very slow to 'kick-off' the ground temperatures took far longer than normal to warm up, we had some lovely warm days but the cold nights kept the ground very cold. Ground frosts were recorded throughout most of the UK right into May! Very unusual!
The cold ground meant that most grass seeds would not germinate, only the very tough coarse grasses would germinate and as we use high quality grass seeds they do require warmer temperatures in order to germinate. Grounds appear to be at a good temperature for germination and have been in the majority of the UK, no so much in the North, for the last few weeks. Any seeds put down correctly now, and properly cared for, should soon germinate.

I applied Patch Magic in my garden to repair a patch of grass I used Roundup on to kill the Couch Grass, I applied about 3 weeks ago and now the grass is about 1 inch high. It is really important to keep the product moist, dry seed wont germinate. If using just grass seed on its own, please make sure you prepare your ground properly - my advice is to soak the area well, apply some top soil - if over seeding just a 5mm layer of soil is fine -, water again, apply seed then lightly water in. Keep the soil moist and seeds will soon germinate.

Hope that helps

Thank you all for your replies. i did indeed soak then rake over the soil.. rosie the patch magic is a little too expensive for me to try again. i did not keep my receipts, when you buy something you trust you dont keep receipts, otherwise we'd have drawers full of the things! miracle gro have been helpful, but i have to say that i am still dumb-founded as to why not a single seed has germinated!

On 1st May I sowed Patch Magic on my wife’s grave . She died last October and the grave was backfilled with the material removed, sandy clay. I am not a gardener but my late wife had window boxes and hanging baskets around the house. I spread the contents of three or four window boxes over the grave (the plants therein having long since died off). I presume that this material was pure compost which I thought would be an ideal medium for sowing grass in. It had previously supported plants.
After sowing the seed were well watered as per instructions. I myself visit my wife’s grave every Monday with a watering can &10 Litres of water. In addition the weather since 1st May has been warm and showery. Conditions could not have been better yet after 5 weeks no grass has appeared.
I purchased the Patch Magic (Batch no. 10060126 , sealed 2/20/10) in B&Q store in Belfast. We are told will grow anywhere even on concrete.
I used only 75% of the container of seed and I am now carrying out germination tests on some of the remaining seed. To date the results are zero germination.
It was only after ringing “lovethegarden” that I had a look at this forum and found that I am not alone, that others have had the same problem.

Hi jjmac,

Sorry to hear of your experience. Miracle-Gro Patch Magic is an excellent new product launched this year, we have received excellent feedback, along side the expected complaints with any new product. From the details we have received we have found that the most likely reason for experiencing poor results would be due to lack of water.

The reason we have found for poor results is when the coir base is not kept moist. It is very important to keep the brown coir compost moist, during dry conditions this may require you to water every day. Is it possible for this to happen? Perhaps a grounds keeper may be able to assist you?

Providing the product is applied correctly and kept moist, we are confident that excellent results will be achieved.

I have used this product myself and can assure you that it did work wonders on my lawn. Please note that a light shower of rain may not be enough to thoroughly soak the coir. I watered mine every evening and now, about 5 weeks later, I have cut the new area 3 times and it looks great.

Hope that helps,

It has now been 3 weeks since I was convinced to buy Miracle Grow from Local Garden Centre so I happily left two bags and almost £50 lighter. The young man in the centre assured me it was fantastic. Well I could count the new shoots on my hands. Despite keeping it watered regularly (admitidly not every day) I have had very little growth. My lawn had been recently scarified and fed so was perfect for new growth. Where the shoots have appreared it is where I have put a large amount down say palm sized. In my opinion I don't think this product is that good for larger areas as it spreads to thinly and by doing so the amount of seed must be limited. I went back to my Garden Centre and spoke to one of the Managers whi admitted there had been mixed reviews and advised me to look on this website. He offerd me a refund or two new bags of Miracle Grow. I have opted for the two new bags and will give it another go. My wife and I are away on holiday for a week next week so I am not going to use it ntil our return to ensure it gets watered every day. I will keep this forum posted of my results.
Nick

Hi Nick,

The product is designed to be a patch repair product, rather than seeding new lawns or large areas. It is very common for consumers to put down too much grass seed when they are repairing or even seeding a new lawn. Too much seed will lead to competition for moisture, nutrients and space. Which can cause weakened growth.
Make sure you don't apply products to the lawn prior to re-seeding. It's best to check the on-pack advice on other lawn care products with regards to re-seeding. Some lawn care products require a gap between applying and re-seeding. Especially those containing a weed killer.

Let us know how you get on Nick, remember to give a really good soaking when you first apply it, then keep it nice and moist, don't let it dry out.

Have a nice holiday smile
