Lawn Seeding/Repairing
Types of grass seed
First decide on the type of lawn you want and how you will use the area. You can then choose the correct seed mixture that will perfectly match your lifestyle and your garden. Measure the area to be seeded and buy the amount of grass seed you need. EverGreen Grass Seed mixtures are blended from purpose bred sports turf grass varieties tested by the Sports Turf Research Institute. The mixtures have a unique formula that contains Headstart® to improve germination. EverGreen Grass Seed is treated with bird repellent to make it less palatable to birds.

Sowing a new lawn
1. Prepare the site
Dig the area and remove large stones and roots of perennial weeds. Add EverGreen Lawn Soil to improve the water-holding capacity and structure of the soil. Level and firm the surface by raking and treading over the surface.
2. Fallow the site
Allow the dormant weed seeds to germinate and after a couple of weeks kill off this top growth with Weedol 2. Apply EverGreen Lawn Start to the surface and rake in while you level again. This balanced plant food mixture ensures quick establishment of new grasses with strong healthy roots.
3. Sow the seed
Wait until the soil is evenly moist. The sowing rate is 35g/ sq m (35g a large handful). Sow half the seed from left to right and the rest from top to bottom to achieve even coverage. Rake the seed into the surface and ensure the soil remains moist until germination occurs.
4. Keep the soil moist
In Autumn and early Spring rains should keep the soil evenly moist. In dry weather water the seed occasionally in the evenings.
5. After care
Germination will be seen in 2-3 weeks depending on temperature. Lightly trim the grass to a minimum of 4cm when it is 5-8cm (2-3in) long overall. Then mow every couple of weeks gradually reducing the cutting height to 2.5cm (1in). Wait at least six months before applying a lawn food such as Scotts Lawn Builder Lawn Food.
Renovating a worn lawn
If the overall grass cover of your lawn is thin or there are noticeable bare patches around the lawn then over-seeding in the Autumn or early Spring is called for.
1. Rake the area
Use a rake to loosen the soil surface and remove any obvious weeds or stones. A sprinkling of EverGreen Lawn Soil worked into your existing surface will help to provide a fine seed bed.
2. Sow the seed
Choose one of the EverGreen Grass Seed mixtures and apply evenly over the lawn at 25g per square metre. Rake into the soil surface so that the seed is covered.
3. Keep the lawn well watered
Water the area every few days if the weather is dry.
4. Repair bare patches
Well worn play areas, goal mouths and race tracks need to be re-seeded over Winter. You will get hard-wearing results from EverGreen Multi-Purpose Grass Seed or the EverGreen Lawn Repair Kit. Follow the directions on the pack for great results. Don’t forget to persuade the children to move play areas around the garden next Summer.
