Helping to sow the Seeds of Hope

Giving Back at The Seeds of Hope Children’s Garden: Jane Johns, Debbie Watson, Adrian Picken and Paul Patton
As part of Scotts Miracle-Gro’s community outreach activities – where we help to provide gardening to audiences that can truly enjoy, learn and benefit from a deeper involvement in gardening and horticulture – we support several chosen charities.
One of these is The Seeds of Hope Children’s Garden, which is designed to help children and young people explore feelings of loss with the support of their families, teachers and carers.
The Garden is situated in the grounds of Guildford Cathedral and was created by Caroline Jay. When the Garden was created, we made a donation to help in its construction and pledged our continuing support in the way of regular visits to carry out maintenance work.
Recently, a team of Scotts volunteers spent 5 hours working in the garden. We started by digging out some of the established shrubs from the Summer Garden and, where possible, transplanted them into the Spring Garden – not an easy task on solid clay! We removed the old lavender edging and refreshed it with new plants, prepared one bed for bare-root roses arriving later in the autumn, planted some more holly in the establishing holly hedge to fill in some gaps and mulched around the plants in the garden where needed. All the jobs were greatly helped by the full pallet of compost that we had donated to the garden.
Along with founder Caroline Jay, the keen volunteers from Miracle-Gro were Adrian Picken, Debbie Watson, Jane Johns, Paul Patton and Miracle-Gro Giving Back Organiser, Vicky Page.
