Decorative finishes

Decorative Finish

Covering soil with a decorative bark provides a clean visual background that makes plants and flowers shine through and really finishes off your garden in style.

Applying a layer of organic matter to soil surfaces (called a mulch or bark) does more than make your garden look attractive. It helps to retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth and will gradually improve the structure of your soil.

The best time to apply a mulch is when the soil is thoroughly soaked through. Most often this is in late winter or early spring. A minimum layer should be 5cm (2in) thick so that it reduces unnecessary evaporation from the soil surface.
