Ants in the Home

Adult worker Ant
Description
Ants have a varied diet. The search for food by the worker ant often takes them indoors. They eat sugar, fats and grains. Not surprisingly they are often found in larder and kitchens during the Summer. There are many ways to kill Ants but some are not as effective as others. Some products are fast acting and you see the ants die right before your eyes (i.e. boiling water and ant powder), but remember the Ants that you see, walking about above ground, are just the worker ants. The nest is the heart of the problem, it houses the Queen and 100’s of larvae and cocoons.
You need to kill the nest to stop the problem. No nest, no ants, no problems.
Treatment and control
Dusting the nest sites
Ant Powders are a traditional product but they are not carried back to the nest. Products containing any one of the following active ingredients can be effective: Bendiocarb, for example Ant Stop! Powder. Permethrin, for example Nippon Ant Killer Powder. Please note, these products are not suitable for use on plants.
Spraying
Ant Stop Gun! (contains deltamethrin) is a ready to use liquid which is also taken back to infect the entire nest. This way the whole nest is destroyed. Please note, this product is not suitable for use on plants.
Traps
The best way to control ants is by destroying the nest. Ant Stop! Bait Station (contains fipronil), a bait which worker ants collect and take back to the nest to share with other ants in the nest, including the Queen. This way the whole nest is destroyed. Place the traps adjacent to nests or runs. Effective for up to 3 months.
