How to create your own root vegetable allotment no matter how limited your space

We can’t show you how to grow the meat, but we can show you how to grow the two veg. You don’t need an allotment or even a vegetable patch – you just need a little bit of space and know how… A sunny corner, a couple of gro-sacs, some vegetable seeds and regular watering are the only ingredients you’ll need for growing your favourite root vegetables. It’s a lot cheaper than buying them!

Ingredients

  • Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potato & Vegetable Gro-sac
  • Miracle-Gro Gro Your Own Fruit & Vegetable Liquid Plant Food
  • Seed potatoes, or other root vegetable seeds

Other useful items

Scissors, gardening gloves, trowel, watering can or hose

1. Purchase your seed potatoes at the garden centre from January onwards and ‘chit’ (allow to shoot) by storing in a cool, light place for a few weeks until the first shoots reach about 2.5cm long.

2. February – March: Place your Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potato & Vegetable Gro-sac in a sunny, frost-free spot in your garden or on your patio or balcony.

3. Shake the Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potato & Vegetable Gro-sac to loosen the compost, cut along the top of the bag to create an opening, and puncture four drainage holes where indicated.

4. Roll down the top of the gro-sac as indicated on the bag, then carefully push up to five seed potatoes about 15cm deep and leave to grow. Water whenever the compost feels dry.

5. February – July: In separate Miracle-Gro gro-sacs, try growing other veg such as leeks, carrots, parsnips or shallots, simply follow the on-pack instructions. You could also plant pots of herbs nearby so you can pick your rosemary, thyme or sage as you harvest the veg for your organic Sunday roast.

6. Each Miracle-Gro gro-sac contains enough plant food to nourish your veg for six weeks, after that use Miracle-Gro Gro Your Own Fruit & Vegetable Liquid Plant Food every two weeks.

June – October: It’s time to harvest your crops and enjoy the fruits of your labours.
