Types of Weed

These persistent invaders can be divided into four groups:

Fat HenAnnual Weeds

The ones that last for one growing season only but which leave their seeds for next year

Examples:

  • Fat Hen (pictured above)
  • Chickweed
  • Groundsel
  • Shepherd’s Purse
  • Speedwell

Ground ElderPerennial and Deep Rooted Weeds

The ones that keep coming back, year after year, that can grow again from even the smallest left-over segment.

Examples:

  • Ground Elder (pictured above)
  • Bindweed
  • Couch Grass
  • Creeping Thistle
  • Dock

BramblesWoody Weeds

Seedlings and weeds that develop a woody stem.

Examples:

  • Brambles (pictured above)
  • Japanese Knotweed
  • Nettles
  • Sycamore Seedlings

DandelionLawn Weeds

The plants that can grow so vigorously, they simply ‘suffocate’ the grass.

Examples:

  • Dandelion (pictured above)
  • Clover
  • Buttercup
  • Daisy
