Ideally a pond needs both sunlight and shade to encourage plants and wildlife. Site the pond to one side of your patch where it can be a feature but blend into the rest of the garden. Don't dig one under a tree for shade as falling leaves will clog the pond use plants to shade the water. If you have stoney ground make sure they are all removed from the base and sides of the pond for about 50mm depth to reduce the risk of punctures to the liner. Children are fascinated by water so maybe wise to have a pebble pond with plants but no water depth to avoid accidents.
