When to hard prune my privet hedge

When to hard prune my privet hedge

Asked 1 year 9 months ago by MARGARET938

My anceient privet hedge has started to show holes in it and lots of dry branches in the middle with no foliage. This has only occured on one side, the side nearest the road. I am wondering if it will benefit from a hard prune, if so when should it be done?

Thank you Tim Farrant for your advice.  I will do all the things you mention, the only thing is you suggest Rose and Shrub Plant Food.  I have a large bag of growmore, with this do the same job?

We would advise hard pruning

We would advise hard pruning in mid spring time, to avoid frosts, cutting back one side of the hedge and a year later the other side. Cut back 15cm beyond where you want the hedge to grow to and feed with Miracle Gro Rose and Shrub Plant Food according to label instructions. If the weather turns dry during the growing season water well to encourage growth.
