Stripped of all leaves by end of August but were healthy bushes at the end of July. I have looked after them in just the same way as previous years & they have always been very health.

I've never heard of Berberis sawfly only the sawfly that sometimes affects my gooseberry bush. Many thanks for your advice.

Berberis

Berberis do suffer from Berberis sawfly... so check to see if you can spot any of the tiny caterpillar like larvae.

Mildew and leaf spot can also be an issue, so it's worth checking the foliage thoroughly on your plants to see if any damage or unusual discoloration is visible.

If one has died, dig it up to check the roots, if it still has a full set of healthy roots then the problem is likely to be above ground. If the roots have rotted, or just disappeared, it is likely that you have a soil borne disease or possible grubs such as Vine Weevil larvae munching on your plants roots.

Let us know if you find anything...
