Can I harvest vegetables and soft fruits from my garden after it was accidentally treated with Slug Clear?

Asked 2 years 2 months ago by dc57

I have a slug/snail infestation in my garden. It was suggested to me to use Slug Clear.
I have a 250ml bottle of Slug Clear and up to now I have used 2 x 15ml in 2 x 5l watering cans and sprayed this on about 11 sq. meters of my garden. This is the only application that I have made so far.

However, treated area not only has flowers on it, it also has some young fruit trees ( apples, pears, plums, figs and cherries) as well as raspberries. I treated the ground only but forgot that I had planted some vegetable seeds like beans. spinach, swiss chard, cucumber , 'perepetual' beet and tomatoes. My fruit trees are doing well and all the vegetable are now coming through the soil.

I am now very concerned about the amount of metaldehyde in soil. I have looked here http://www.toxipedia.org/display/toxipedia/Metaldehyde#Metaldehyde-INCHE... but although it says ' Metaldehyde ...... the compound has a half-life of only several days in soil and is soluble in water', I am not sure what this means? I don't intend to use Slug Clear in this area again but will it be safe to harvest any fruit or vegetables this growing season?

I would very much appreciate your views on this situation.

Kind regards

Dusanka
