How do you kill carex grass that is growing in a rhyne?

This grass has been blown in and is now growing up the banks and into our lawns. The roots are very thick, strong and grow down at last 2 feet. We have had some dug out with a digger but a few remain and are beginning to multiply again. The grasses are now taller than they are in this picture. We also have mares tails to fight as well - a nightmare!

How To Kill Carex Grass

Posted 24 Aug 2016

Hi Sue,

The best way to kill off this type of grass is by treating it with a systemic weedkiller such as Weedol Rootkill Plus or Roundup Fast Action.  If you can put a box around it to stop any of the weedkiller drifting or dripping onto the grass around/underneath it, then spray it after 7-10 days you should start to seeing it dying off, total weed death can take up to 28 days.

You can use the same weedkillers as mentioned above to treat mares tail, but go over these areas with a rake, to bruise them and this will make it easier for the weedkiller to be lethally absorbed and not run off it.

Kind Regards
