The Anglia in Bloom Presentation

In November, Consumer Services Supervisor, Vicky Page, and PR Officer, Geoff Hodge, were asked to give a presentation to the Anglia in Bloom regional delegates and Anglia in Bloom Trustees on Scotts Miracle-Gro composts and peat replacements.

Here’s a round-up our presentation.

Scotts Miracle-Gro produces a wide range of best selling composts. These are aimed at gardeners of all abilities to enable them to get the best results from all their plants. The range is, what we call, ‘fit for purpose’ – and includes different composts for all stages of plant growth and for all purposes. But it also includes the best all-purpose/multipurpose composts for those gardeners who only want to use one type of compost.

Peat replacements

Geoff Hodge demonstrates the benefits of FibreSmart wood fibreScotts Miracle-Gro is a very active member of the Growing Media Association and is working closely with the horticultural industry towards the Government’s planned phasing out of peat for retail by 2020.

We currently use a number of quality peat replacements in all our growing media to help produce the best results. We also put a ‘peat content bar’ on all our bags of growing media, so gardeners can easily see what percentage of peat they are buying. From a position where most products contained more than 80% peat 10 years ago, this now ranges from a maximum 80% peat in a small number of products, where we currently feel that peat is still an important constituent, to 40-50%, all the way down to 100% peat free. Totally peat-free composts include Miracle-Gro Expand ‘n Gro, which is based on our exclusive processed coir.

The materials used in our growing media include:

  • Peat – from responsibly harvested sources.
  • Coir – unique coir compost, specially processed and formulated by us
  • FibreSmart wood fibre – our unique, patent-protected technology, based on UK-sourced, renewable, FSC softwoods
  • Green compost – not green waste, which exceeds PAS100(*) standards.
  • Bark – processed to our demanding specifications.

New composts for 2014

Whenever we launch new products, this is based on consumer testing, growing trials and research. Trials and testing are carried out at our Levington Research Station in Suffolk. We have introduced two new composts for 2014.

Miracle-Gro Potting Mix Root Boosting Compost is formulated to provide the ideal growing conditions needed for potting up and growing on seedlings and all plants. Its open, porous structure stimulates strong root growth. It also includes our Root Growth Feed, which provides the optimum balance of nutrients to encourage healthy root development, and a three-month, long-term, balanced feed.

Levington Original Multi Purpose Compost uses the tried and trusted original Levington formula, which as been used for more than 50 years by experienced and professional gardeners. It is perfect for all garden uses including seed sowing.

More information on both these composts - and our other new products for 2014 - will be available from the website in early January.

* The Publicly Available Specification PAS100 for composted materials was sponsored by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and developed in conjunction with the Association for Organics Recycling (AFOR). Our green compost undergoes stringent tests to monitor levels of contamination.
