What do you get if you combine a bunch of pre-school children and Miracle-Gro compost? You produce a nursery in Woolwich, South East London, full of children who love gardening!

Little Learners Nursery wrote to Miracle-Gro earlier this year to see if we would support their gardening project. Jane Main, Garden Project Co-Ordinator, has ambitious plans to help the children understand where food comes from and to teach them about healthy eating and attitudes towards food. With 2 raised beds, the children have grown a mixture of soft fruit and vegetables from seeds, monitoring their growth along the way.

Speaking about the project, Jane says: “We started sowing seeds earlier this year with the children, they have taken great pride in sowing, planting out and watching them grow. With the help from Miracle-Gro and the very generous amounts of compost you have provided, we have been able to plant out their seedlings and have marvelled at the crops they have produced. More recently, the children have been enjoying their harvests of courgettes, peas, runner beans, potatoes, strawberries and raspberries. It’s been such a joy to watch them nurture their plants and appreciate where their tasty treats have come from and it’s all been thanks to the wonderful support of Miracle-Gro.”

Future plans

But their plans don’t stop there. With a Greenwich Pride grant from The Royal Borough of Greenwich, the plans for the garden include expanding the allotment area and adding a new sensory garden and garden classroom where the Miracle-Gro compost will be used to extend the children's learning.
