A recent survey by shows that 97% of UK households don't compost, and throw compostable waste straight into the bin - even if council collection facilities exist. The vast majority of Britons have never knowingly composted food or garden waste.

A compost heap will help you make good compostAs a result of this lack of composting, thousands of tons of recyclable waste go into landfill or incineration every year.

The three commonest reasons for not having a compost heap or compost bin or not composting were

  • Lack of time
  • Lack of motivation
  • Lack of gardening skill

15% of those asked said they didn't have a garden.

Well, we can't do much about giving you time and motivation, and you don't really need any 'gardening skill' to make compost - just some good information on how to do it. Click here to see our easy guide to composting

If we can get more people to compost, then maybe we can help reduce this problem. If you do compost, not only will you be helping to reduce the landfill problem - you'll end up with a hugely valuable, free compost for use around the garden.
