FEATURES

  • The low salt formula prevents chemical burning on leaf tips, making this potting mix ideal for wick watering systems as well as conventional top watering
  • Includes Coir, a sustainable resource that improves moisture retention while still allowing excess to drain away freely
  • Boosted levels of calcium and potassium to produce strong plants and stems and encourage continuous flowering over many months - calcium also strengthens resistance to diseases
  • Wetting agent assists moisture to soak into the potting mix and helps roots absorb nutrients
  • Certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium potting mixes

SUITABLE FOR

  • African violets (Saintpaulia) and other popular members of the gesneriad family including florists' gloxinia, lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus), Columnea, Streptocarpus, flame violet (Episcia)
  • Cyclamen and other flowering indoor plants
  • Perfect for wick watering (where a 'material wick' is used to draw water up into the potting mix from a reservoir below the plant pot) as well as conventional top watering. The reservoir may also include a soluble fertiliser
  • Safe to use on new plants - the controlled release of nutrients means it will not burn soft leaves or tender young roots

NOT SUITABLE FOR

  • Don't use in hydroponic growing systems
  • Don't use on lawns - use only specifically named lawn topdress soils on grassed areas

HOW TO USE

  1. Use African Violet & Cyclamen Mix straight from the bag - no further additives required
  2. Select a clean pot with large drainage holes and partly fill it with new potting mix - if using wick watering method, ensure the wick is coiled in the base of the pot and protrudes through one of the drainage holes before adding any potting mix
  3. Carefully knock the plant from its existing pot and loosen the root ball. Trim off any dead or damaged roots
  4. Place the plant in the centre of the pot and fill with potting mix
  5. Gently tap the new pot down to help the new potting mix settle in and around the roots. Do not pack the potting mix down
  6. Thoroughly water the plant and allow it to drain freely - if necessary, top the potting mix up again to the suggested level of 2-3cm below the rim.
  7. If using wick watering method, place the wick into the reservoir filled with water or nutrient solution to initiate the wicking process. Make sure the wick is wet before putting it into the reservoir, otherwise it may not work correctly
  8. Place the pot in a sheltered spot away from direct spotlight for 5 days to allow the plant to settle and acclimatise before moving it to a permanent home

WHEN TO USE

  • Potting mixes can be used at any time of the year
  • Repotting established pot plants is best done either in Spring or Autumn - avoid Winter or Summer as the extremes of temperature may stress plants
  • Flowering plants should be repotted after they have flowered - enjoy the blooms first!

ONGOING PLANT CARE

  • African Violet Potting Mix contains a balanced fertiliser up to 6 months - additional fertiliser may be required in time, depending on plant needs
  • Avoid allowing plants to dry out - plants should be watered immediately after potting and frequently enough to keep the potting mix moist (not wet)
  • Plants should be re-potted with new potting mix when they have outgrown the pot or after 12-18 months

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The low salt formulation prevents chemical burning of the leaf tips of these soft-leaved plants. It also minimises the potential for a salt crust developing on the surface of the mix when plants are wick watered

High calcium and potassium encourage strong stems and prolonged flowering

Coir, made from coconut fibre, is a renewable resource
