MEET The Technical Team Driving Our Product Excellence

Where science meets the garden

Our technical team of 14 brings together a powerhouse mix of specialists — three chemists, one chemical engineer, one soil scientist, one horticulturist, two agronomists and two environmental scientists — all working to ensure every Scotts product meets the highest standards of safety, performance and reliability.

Whatever your garden needs, you can trust that our products are backed by deep scientific expertise and rigorous testing at every step.

Collaborations & storytelling

Yallaroo doubles as a learning hub. Garden Gurus have filmed here to help bring premium growing media benefits to life for TV and digital audiences, and our trials regularly host category partners and media. We also engage with nearby research institutions to explore endorsement opportunities and joint trials.

Our trial site in NSW, proving what works in Aussie gardens

Nestled in the Hawkesbury, just outside Richmond in Kurmond, NSW, you’ll find Scotts dedicated research station. Named Yallaroo, inspired by the Indigenous word for “flowers”, this site is where our team tests every product and every promise to test under real Australian conditions.

Across expansive turf plots, in‑ground garden beds and a purpose‑built glasshouse, we develop, validate and refine the solutions you’ll see on shelves. It’s where innovation meets real‑world performance, ensuring the products you trust deliver season after season.

And Yallaroo is just one part of our national commitment to quality. Evergreen Garden Care operates additional research hubs for Baileys and Debco in WA, VIC and QLD — allowing us to trial and test across Australia’s diverse climates and soils.

WHY DOES IT MATTER

Because no matter how big or small your garden is, you can count on Scotts products to meet the same high standards. Our nationwide testing ensures consistent quality, reliable performance and results you can trust every time.

OUR EXPERTS

Our in‑house team includes horticulturalists, agronomists, soil and environmental scientists and chemists, all working alongside our innovation and marketing teams. Together, they help shape, test and refine every product that reaches Australian gardens.

QUALITY CHECKS

Ongoing quality monitoring through our National Growing Media Trials ensures every mix performs consistently across our network. We track structure, drainage, nutrient release and plant response to maintain the standards gardeners expect from Scotts.

Glasshouse

Our dedicated 8‑acre trial facility, Yallaroo, gives us the unique ability to run both real‑world and controlled testing, ensuring every Scotts product delivers exactly what it promises.

Our purpose‑built 400 m² glasshouse features irrigated capacity for more than 2,000 plants, allowing year‑round formulation work, claim‑support trials, and raw‑material testing. By setting and controlling precise conditions, we can generate reliable, repeatable results that underpin the performance of every product we make.

Turf Plots

2,500 m² of turf plots covering Australia’s popular warm season grasses (Buffalo, Kikuyu, Couch) plus common cool season varieties — ideal for fertiliser, wetting agent and lawn care testing.

Garden Plots

In ground garden, vegetable and weed plots that replicate real consumer conditions for trials on soil improvers, organic fertilisers and mulches.

These plots also help us monitor plant health, nutrient response and weed behaviour year‑round so we can refine formulas and ensure reliable performance in Australian backyards.

Roses

Hundreds of roses (300+ across 5 cultivars) for ornamental formulation trials, pest and disease testing.

Inside Our Trials Program

WHAT WE’RE TESTING RIGHT NOW

Our research program evolves with the seasons and with what Aussie gardeners need most. Current and ongoing trials include:

Growing media controls and performance monitoring

Across Scotts Osmocote, Scotts Lawn Builder, Debco and key competitor products — including specialty mixes for edibles and indoor plants — we assess structure, moisture management, nutrient release and overall plant response to ensure every mix delivers consistent, reliable quality.

Why trials matter

Every product we launch is backed by science and proven results. Yallaroo enables controlled and real-world testing, so we can validate claims, optimise formulations and give gardeners confidence that our products will perform at home — not just in the lab.
